After tons of rumors and leaks, Xiaomi has finally unveiled its flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 8 on Thursday at Xiaomi’s largest launch event in China. Along with Xiaomi Mi 8, the company also announces the two other variants, Xiaomi Mi 8 Special Edition and Mi 8 Explorer Edition. Apart from smartphones, Xiaomi also introduces the Mi Band 3 successor of Mi Band 2, Mi VR standalone, Mi TV 4 75-inch and MIUI 10.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 is a flagship level smartphone with all high-end specifications that can easily beat all high-end smartphones of 2018 til now. The Mi 8 SE (Special Edition) is a mid-range smartphone and its the first smartphone that debuts with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710. While the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition is same like as normal Mi 8 with an addition of In-Display FingerPrint Sensor, Transparent Back and 8GB RAM/256GB Internal Storage.
Xiaomi Mi 8 is the world’s first smartphone that comes with dual frequency GPS L1-L5 for much more accurate navigation.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Specifications
The Xiaomi Mi 8 sports a tall 6.21-inch Super AMOLED display with 18:7:9 aspect ratio, notch, and resolution of 1080×2248 pixels. The Mi 8 features a 7000-grade aluminum body with front and back glass and a notch on top just like an iPhone X. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 which is the high-end processor for mobile devices til now. Xiaomi also brags by showing the Antutu benchmarks score of Mi 8 with whopping 301,472 which is the highest score til now on any smartphone.
Speaking about the camera, the Xiaomi Mi 8 features two 12-megapixel sensors at rear with a Dual LED flash in the middle just like an iPhone X. The camera comes with 4-axis OIS, Dual Pixel Autofocus, 2x Optical Zoom, AI Portrait Mode, AI Scene Detection and aperture f/1.8 and f/2.4 respectively. The rear camera also capable to shoot 4K videos at 60fps and 1080p at 240fps. DxO Mark has given the Mi 8 an impressive 105 camera benchmark score which is the best score in smartphone camera til now. The front camera has 20MP selfie shooter with f/2.0 and 1.8µ pixel size for better selfies.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo-based on latest MIUI 10 out of the box. The smartphone is backed by a 3000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0+ which is also the latest fast charging technology by Qualcomm. The Mi 8 lacks 3.5mm audio lack apart from this the device has connectivity options such as WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac dual-band, dual-band GPS, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C. Both phones have infrared Face Unlock option which can unlock your phone even in dark.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition
Xioami also announced the Explorer Edition of Mi 8 which comes with similar hardware as the Mi 8 with some extra implementation and cosmetic changes. In addition, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition has a transparent back panel and in-display fingerprint sensor. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition comes with 3D Face Unlock support for better security.
Xioami Mi 8 SE (Special Edition)
The Xioami Mi 8 SE is similar to the Mi 8 regular version in terms of looks with lower specifications. The Mi 8 SE comes with a 5.88-inch Super AMOLED FHD+ display with 18:7:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the smartphone has all new Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 octa-core SoC that clocks at 2.2GHz with Adreno 616. The Mi 8 SE comes in two RAM variant: 4GB RAM/ 64GB internal storage and 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage.
Coming to camera department, the device has 12MP + 5MP camera setup at rear with AI Portrait, AI scene detection, EIS, Dual Pixel Autofocus, f/1.9 aperture and LED flash. The camera also capable to shoot videos in 4K at 60fps. The front camera has 20-megapixel selfie shooter with f/2.0. The Mi 8SE comes with 3120mAh battery with QC 3.0 support. The smartphone runs on Android 8.1 based on MIUI 10.
Pricing and Availability
The Xiaomi Mi 8 has been priced at CNY 2,699 (approx Rs. 28,500 and $425) for the 64GB variant. The 128GB version is priced at CNY 2,999 (approx Rs. 31,600 and $470) while the 256GB variant costs CNY 3,299 (approx Rs. 34,800 and $518). All variants come with 6GB RAM. White, Blue and Black color options are also available.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE has been priced at CNY 1,799 (~ Rs. 18,960) for the 4GB+64GB variant and for the 6GB+64GB is available for CNY 1,999 (~ Rs. 21,000). The smartphone comes in four colors: Golden, Dark Grey, Bright Blue and Bright Black.
The premium version of Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition is also available at CNY 3699 (approx Rs. 38,800) for the 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
